Sanchem’s SafeGard® CC-3400 is a RoHS compliant chromate-free chemical conversion coating that leaves an electrically conductive clear or gold protective surface treatment on wrought aluminum, aluminum castings, magnesium, stainless steel, zinc and galvanized steel. Out gassing that occurs when heating castings, will not affect chromate-free SafeGard CC-3400 conversion coating. This is due to the fact that SafeGard CC reacts to the aluminum surface at the molecular level it is not a surface coating. It is a true conversion coating.
SafeGard 3000 - a non electolytic anodized oxide coating. The Naval Air Development Center tested this chromate-free metal surface treatment to the Mil-C-5541 specification. Stork Technimet Inc: Passed 168 hours Salt Spray testing per Mil-C5541E on aluminum alloy 7075 following ASTM B-117. Stock Technimet is an ISO-Certified lab.

3M’s Scotchlite Reflective Sheeting for Traffic Signs – Safegard CC-3400 is 3M approved. 3M required that a hexavalent chrome pretreatment be used under 3M’s Scotchlite Reflective Sheeting for Traffic Signs. 3M required that SafeGard CC-3400 pass both a 6 months outdoor exposure testing at LaQue Corrosion Services in Wrightville Beach, NC and Neutral Salt Spray testing which was performed at Phoenix Chemical laboratory in Chicago, IL using both 6061 & 5052 aluminum alloys.

Magnesium is a very reactive metal so salt spray tests according to ASTM B-117 are not generally run. The corrosion resistance of chromate conversion coated magnesium is quite small to begin with and there are no specified bare salt spray corrosion tests for magnesium.
